Re: [802SEC] Fwd: IEEE Region 6 Spring 2024: Internet at 50 and Other Upcoming Events

The most recent information given to me is that the talks will be at the Cabana Hyatt in Palo Alto
on the afternoon of the 19th.

The showing of the "plaque on the wall" will still  be at the CHM on the afternoon of the 20th.

But then, I seem to be on the information periphery and I am not a "decisioner" in these matters.

The 14th IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (IEEE GHTC 2024) is a flagship international conference sharing practical, technology-enabled solutions that address the needs of underserved communities in resource-constrained environments around the world. Submissions should discuss work done to alleviate poverty, provide education and connectivity, and create equitable access to water, energy, and secure food sources with minimal impact on the planet and environment.

GHTC 2024 will be hosted at Villanova University (Pennsylvania, USA) on October 23-26, 2024.

Submissions by community representatives, practitioners (governmental, for-profit and nonprofit), academics, private sector organizations and policy makers describing intervention design and implementation, field experiences and best practices, case studies, project monitoring and evaluation results, and original research are sought. Of particular interest are works that highlight community engagement and collaboration as well as long-term engagement. Paper submissions should include results that have not previously been published and have not been submitted to another conference or journal.

IEEE GHTC 2024 Thematic areas are centered around the UN Sustainable Development Goals and include (but are not limited to):

Focus Area (see website Call for Papers page for details)

Good Health and Well Being (ref: SDG3)
Affordable & Clean Energy (ref: SDG7)
Communication/Connectivity in Support of Development
Disaster Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery
Technologies that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (ref: SDG5)

Decent Work and Economic Growth (ref: SDG8)
Agriculture and Food Security (ref: SDG2)
Technology Impacts on Societal Evolution
Other Related United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (ref: SDGs 9, 11, 12, 14)

Two types of submissions are invited for presentation at GHTC:

Full Papers: for Publication and Presentation: mature results, tested innovations, or completed projects with a minimum of 4 and should not exceed eight pages.

Oral-Only Project Talks: discussion of fieldwork in progress (with insufficient results for a full paper) that addresses intention, unexpected challenges, unintended outcomes, successes, and failures. Oral-Only submissions should be described in one or two pages.

For complete details on topics and submission see the GHTC 2024 Author Central pages.

Abstract:

In the face of global challenges such as the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), social institutions face a dilemma. Institutions are the stable foundations of society, operating with incremental rates of change to maintain stability. Yet the global challenges all involve rapid rates of change. This talk will focus on climate change, artificial intelligence, and fragile supply chains, each of which are beyond the scope of individual organizations, requiring many forms of institutional action. Multi-stakeholder consortia will be presented as institutional arrangements that can simultaneously ensure stability and agility.

Biography:

Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld is the Florence G. Heller Chair and Professor in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. He leads research on institutional agility in the 21st Century. Previously he served as a professor and dean of the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and as a faculty member in MIT's Engineering Systems Division. Joel is a past president of the Labor and Employment Relations Association.

He is an award-winning author who has co-authored or co-edited twelve books and over one hundred articles, book chapters, and policy papers on new technology, stakeholder alignment, high performance work systems, labor-management partnership, negotiations, conflict resolution, and institutional transformation. Joel holds a Ph.D. in industrial relations from MIT and a B.S. in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.
